The “Pales Mountains”. Formed around 60 million years ago by the collision of the African and European tectonic plates. The result of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wind and rain.

Today we dive into northern Italy and into what was once the depth of a warm and shallow tropical sea. But more importantly today, we give room to images. Sometimes we should let them do the story telling for us. Hope you enjoy this telling.

Proud peaks, steep cliffs and pale giants spanning over five provinces of northern Italy for more than 140 000 hectares. Enough for a breathtaking escape in the Alpine landscape. While some sites certainly promise unique winter memories, I have a preference for their spring version. The contrast between flat valleys and sharp cliffs has something magical. 


If you are a hike lover, the Dolomites have a variety of sceneries that will make you want more as soon as you reach your first peak. Just so you grasp the immensity of the park: the photography for this telling is the result of just five days in these green valleys.

rising above 3000 meters

Yet beyond its stunning peaks, the Dolomites welcome all levels. From the beginner to the seasoned walker, the possibilities are endless.

From Cinque Torri to the Seceda path, the park has straightforward treks that will give you stunning views from the top. The all too popular Tre Cima di Lavaredo can be done in a day and will leave you panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. As for lakes, Lago di Braies and Lago di Sorapis will get you those turquoise shots.

In the 20th century, the architect Le Corbusier described the Dolomites as "the most beautiful architectural work in the world". Inspiring words from someone whose ideas and designs have had a lasting influence on the world of architecture.

On a more philosophical note, mountains have this ability to make us feel humble. And I think that is especially true for the Dolomites. Standing in one of these deep valleys surrounded by white sheer cliffs reminds us of our own place in nature. I like to think about the triviality of our existence when staring at these geological giants.

Here are two shots that illustrate this feeling for me. On the left is a small church, in front of the Tre Cima di Lavaredo. On the right is our group setting up the camp for the night, a night that will end a 5 days hiking and tent camping trip in the cold Dolomites.

CADINI DI MISURINA

RELATIVELY EASY - 1/2 DAY
From my little experience the best viewpoint in the region. Located opposite the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cadini di Misurina is a group of mountains that soar like sharp rock monoliths with endless layers on the horizon.

TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO

RELATIVELY EASY - 1/2 DAY
By far the most notorious of them all. My personal take would be to go for a sunset. You will get to enjoy the views without the day crowd. The warm colours blending in the white rocks of the three peaks are something to witness.

SECEDA

MODERATE - 1 DAY
One of the most iconic locations in the Dolomites, including its viewpoints on the Geisler Peaks. A hike that you can either start from Ortisei or shortcut with its cable car. Either way, the scene gets magical at sunset too.

ALPE DI SIUSI

EASY - 1 TO 2 DAYS
The Largest Alpine pasture in Europe. Probably one of the most picturesque places in the Dolomites. Endless green meadows and alpine huts framed by the the massive mountain flanks of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto.

A special mention to a very dear friend for this stunning last photography, and to the group with whom I had the chance to share this unique backpacking experience.
The Dolomites are a one of a kind experience. Our time there was pretty limited: we organised our trip in just two of the many valleys the park has to offer. But the scenic views got better each day.
